Sun Sand Surf

Majestic white sandy beaches and an ocean that dances in the sunlight. Spectacular views of the Hen and Chicken Island sanctuaries, Uretiti Beach is a place that you can lay in the sun without another soul in sight.

ACCOMODATION

Tucked in behind the sand dunes is the Department of Conservation camp site. The camp site has 300 non powered tent sites, hot showers & toilet blocks. Access is from SH1 north of the Waipu Golf Course. Further Inland the Waipu Caves Farm Park also offers overnight accomodation. Tuidale Stables has a two Bedroom apartment that sleeps four.

RECREATION

Uretiti Beach and the surrounding area's are an explorers dream. Immediately inland are some of the world's most majestic Glowworm caves. Waipu Caves Farm Park offers Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Bushwalks and a spectacular underground guided cave tour, overnight camping is also available. Further inland are the Waipu Caves a free to enter cave system. Adjacent to the beach is the 19 hole Waipu Golf Club & Driving Range. Horse trekking is also a popular activity with a number of stables located in the region.

CONSERVATION

Uretiti Beach has the distinction of being home to New Zealand's only venomous native Katipō spider. While a bite is extremely painful and can cause systemic symptoms like sweating and cramping, it is very rare and anti-venom is available at hospitals. The Katipō is protected under the wildlife act. The Waipu river inlet further to the south is a protected wildlife sanctuary is teaming with birdlife and home to the bar tailed Godwit and the Northern New Zealand Dotterel. Note there is a vehicle exclusion Zone surrounding this area.

There is an ongoing conservation project along the coastline to protect the Sand Dunes and visitors are advised to stick to the walkways and tracks provided.

URETITI BEACH

Although Uretiti is considered to be a safe beach it is NOT A PATROLLED beach and can have strong outgoing currents and it is recommended that you head north to Ruakaka Beach to swim in the patrolled zone. The Beach is popular with fishermen and Crab Fishers.

On the out going tide the shallow sandy beach becomes an excellent cycle and walkway. Uretiti is also home to one of the countries most popular Nudist Beach's just south of the DOC camp
